WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Starting in our garden on a bright, sunny autumn day in 2011, Blanket Stitch was the idea of Carol and Amy. Keen crafters for years we were happily starting on our Christmas cards for the coming season when we began to discuss how great it would be to start our own business, creating and making handmade items to sell and so Blanket Stitch was born.

A YEAR LATER

A year after forming Blanket Stitch things started to get exciting. We had built considerable stock levels, had been commissioned to make a wedding bib for a bride, vintage wedding bunting as well as beginning to sell our stock at a number of craft fairs.

WEDDING BUNTING

As 2012 progressed we were asked to take part in our first massive task as Blanket Stitch, to create vintage bunting for a forthcoming wedding. We created many metres of wonderful vintage bunting. We then developed our own line on vintage bunting to hire.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS IN 2013

Throughout 2013 we began to exhibit more frequently at craft fairs, with a regular fair at Hertford Museum every month from May 2013, which we continued throughout the rest of the year. We also began to build up our stock of bunting to hire, which is a project we continued to develop in 2014. We also began to take on commissions of our most popular items, such as personalised bunting, knicker bags and felt goods. We also continued to grow our business online in our Folksy shop.

CRAFTY HERTS & NEW WORKSHOPS

Throughout 2014 we ran the Crafty Herts Craft fair in Hertford and Hoddesdon. In 2014 with Blanket Stitch and Crafty Herts going from strength to strength, Carol and Amy decided to branch out into something new, something that had been discussed for a long time: Craft Classes, run and taught by ourselves at locations throughout East Hertfordshire.

BRINGING CRAFTY HERTS TO HODDESDON

2014 saw us move our successful Hertford Craft Fair to Hoddesdon, to a new venue and brought with it many new faces (as well as some old ones too). We had a wonderful time and enjoyed bringing this venture to Hoddesdon.

BUILDING OUR CLASSES

For Blanket Stitch 2015 was all about continuing our love of exhibiting at Craft Fairs, selling and building our online shop and building up an even larger portfolio of classes. With a regular slot in Hobbycraft, Carol taught many new learners how to sew using the sewing machine, with many moving on to our improvers and clothes making courses too. We also offered a number of one-off workshops which were extremely successful.

GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

2016 started off in a grand fashion with the wedding of our co-creator Amy to her husband Ray, a wedding that was entirely handcrafted and of course featured our bunting too!

Our Workshops and classes are thriving, with our sewers learning many skills on both our learn to sew and improvers classes, plus we have lots of wonderful items of clothing being made my some of our learners too.

In May 2016 a dream came true for Blanket Stitch and we opened our own studio in Hoddesdon where we’ll be undertaking many classes, as well as continuing our Hobbycraft in Harlow slot as well. Spring 2016 also saw us have a regular sewing slot in the Your Town street office in Hoddesdon, where we are every Wednesday morning between 10am – 12pm.
